There’s a lot to recommend an Umstead-based tent vacation: 23 miles of hiking trail, miles of bike & bridle trail (with connections for mountain bikers to about twice that much singletrack nearby), fishing, and paddling in Big Lake (seasonal). An extremely convenient location for anyone in the Raleigh area, Umstead provides an easy getaway for anyone who wants to spend a night in nature but doesn't have time for a long drive. Unlike many other campgrounds, it's also open year- round! One caveat: bring ear plugs, because the campground is in close proximity to the runways at adjoining Raleigh-Durham International Airport and, as you’ll quickly discover, the airport never sleeps.
