Wine Spring Horse Camp

Technically, yes, it’s a horse camp. But if they don’t mind, should you?

Not once you see the 15-mile trail network that includes a pair of 7.5-mile loops. One climbs 4,800-foot Goat Bald, which, according to the National Forest Service, “is a large wildlife opening that offers a spectacular view to the west of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Chilhowee Mountains in Tennessee.”

That network also crosses paths with the North Carolina Bartram Trail at Wine Spring Bald. More great views are to be had by following the Bartram east for a mile and a half to 5,385-foot Wayah Bald, where 360-degree views abound from the highest spot in the region. Or, go east for about 7 miles on a gentle downhill to Nantahala Lake. A scenic, well-tended trail.
